How do you set up the Aurora Projector?

Plug it into any USB-C power source, place it a few feet from the wall pointing up at the ceiling, turn the room lights off and switch it on. Start on low brightness and the slowest speed, then set the 30-minute timer.

In the box

The projector, a USB-C cable, and a remote if you bought the Essential edition. The Smart edition is controlled from the app instead. There's no assembly and nothing to screw together.

Power

USB-C, so any phone charger, laptop port or USB wall adapter will run it. Use a proper wall adapter rather than a laptop port if you want full brightness — underpowered sources are the most common reason a projector looks dimmer than expected.

Where to put it

A few feet back from the wall you want the light to climb, angled up toward the ceiling. A nightstand, a shelf, a windowsill or the floor all work. Further back spreads the light wider; closer concentrates it. It's a 5.5 inch unit so it doesn't need a dedicated spot.

Avoid putting it directly under a shelf or beam, and move it a couple of feet if a pendant light is casting a shadow.

Turn the lights off first

The single most common setup mistake. People switch the projector on with the main light still on, decide it's weak, and conclude the product is disappointing. Soft projected light loses to bright ambient light every time. Lights off, curtains closed, then judge it.

Settings to start with

Low brightness, slowest speed. Both are adjustable and most people end up lower than they expect — full brightness in a bedroom is usually more than you want. Pick a color you like and leave it; the people who keep using this long-term almost all settle on one setting.

The timer

30, 60 or 120 minutes. Set it before you get into bed and it switches itself off without you getting back up. If you forget, it shuts down automatically at four hours.

The speaker

Pair it like any Bluetooth speaker — it'll appear in your phone's Bluetooth list. There's white noise built in if you'd rather not play anything from your phone. Both are entirely optional and plenty of people never use either.

Alexa and Google

Smart edition only. Once it's connected you can turn it on, change the color and set the timer by voice. The Essential edition uses its remote and needs no setup at all.
